Week 51

Welcome to the Fifty first bulletin.

Sign up for Horsham District Council’s Jobs Fair Wednesday 28th April 10am - 3pm!
Registration is now open to join us for the first online jobs fair in Horsham. Featuring local employers and openings, come along to pick up some tips and contacts to help you with your job search.

We continue to look at some of the ways that you can use lockdown and COVID as a springboard rather than a wall to your journey and tackle the issues that it has thrown up for the work of work in particular.

How about trying something different?
As many companies start to open their doors again, there are opportunities opening up all over the place. Some have made it to advert stage, but many are still in the early stages of being put together and maybe haven’t even been identified as new roles. This is a great time to reach out to people in a company that you would like to work for and get to know them better. It takes courage and a certain amount of resilience to knock backs, but spending half an hour with someone to learn more about their job could lead to something.

This week’s LinkedIn Activity

If you really want to make an impression and get people coming to you, you will need to post your own original content.

Follow these steps to post your first post. It doesn’t need to be long or complicated, just test the water and you can make it longer as you gain confidence. Talk about something that you know about and make sure you finish with a “call to action”.

One top tip I would add, is to prepare the post on Word or similar and then cut and paste the elements in once you are happy with it. That way you can use Word Count and spell check etc and not worry that it is suddenly going to be published half done if you press the wrong key.

Keep following the bulletins to learn how to use LinkedIn in your job seeking journey.

Looking for some practical ways to prepare for those jobs that you find on our Live Jobs pages?
For those who are new to WISH you will find help to practice answering application or interview questions if you pop back into last year’s bulletins. Just find one that suits you and have a go at one which you know might trip you up. There are 48 weeks to choose from, all accessible from the bulletin bar on the SETAS website.

Prepare for every opportunity
With the Jobs Fair coming up on 28th April, now is the time to polish up your “Elevator Pitch” answer to the question “What are you Looking for?”

This is perhaps something that you might be asked in an interview situation, but it could also be posed as a very open question for you to deal with. The challenge is to come up with a short punchy summary that you are ready to deliver it at any time and to anyone – after all you never know when you are going to meet your future employer either in person or online! This is sometimes called your “elevator pitch” and it is well worth spending time developing and practising it. You need to be able to say everything important in about 30 seconds. Remember it is not intended as a massive long sales pitch, it’s just to gain their attention and hook their interest.

It may be that it has been a long time since you had to answer this question and you are not really sure what you want, other than a regular income to pay the bills. Time considering how your skills can be transferred to another role, business or sector is going to make sure that you are ready to give a coherent response.

If you are struggling to do this on your own, now is the time to get in touch and book a chat.

Community Link are a small team of friendly advisors based at Horsham District Council helping over 1700 vulnerable residents across the district to live independently with the use of assistive technology. Assistive technology enables someone to call for help if required and assistive technology products can also be considered an 'aid for daily living.’ If you think that they might be able to help you or someone in your household then get in touch and someone will arrange to do an assessment. horsham community-link
