Welcome to the tenth bulletin 
 
Thank you to all those who have responded to the survey about way you read our bulletin. It is really helpful to us to know where the issues are and if we start to offer more types of support, we need to tailor it to ways that you can access it.

This week’s Activity 
Now that many people are allowed out on a less restricted basis, it might be a good time to find out more about what Horsham has to offer. If you have access to a car or regular public transport, there is a big temptation to travel to places that you already know and maybe ignore some of the small shops or places to visit which are just on your doorstep. With all the scenes in the media of crowds of people heading off to the beaches and well-known beauty spots, it might be difficult to go straight back to your usual favourite leisure activities while maintaining social distancing. 
 
Now, more than ever, our local Horsham businesses need our help to get themselves back up and running so if you are able to, we would encourage you to support them. Quite apart from anything, most are also going to be employers, so making sure that they are able to survive this crisis could lead to you finding employment yourself! 
 
So, this week’s activity is to find out more, either online or in person, about somewhere new in Horsham that you can visit or support in some way. Here are a few links to get you started but there are lots to find in and around the immediate area as we start to venture out again. 
 
 
There are online trails which you can follow, competitions and all kinds of information. These links can give you some ideas.  
 
 
Online courses that you might wish to consider enrolling on, there is still time to learn something new  
 
 
Skill of the week - Adaptable/Flexible/Willing to Change 
 
One thing is certain about going back to the workplace, it will be a very different place to the one we left. Even if you were to return to the very same role in the same location the impact of COVID is going to affect almost every part of the workforce. Employers could find themselves making changes over and over again as the situation develops and will seek reassurance that any new member of staff will be prepared to adjust along with them. There may well be questions around your ability to work flexibly or from home so think about the logistics of that and be prepared to answer them. 
 
Even if you are the kind of person who finds change easy and you are generally pretty relaxed about it, you are likely to find it a challenge. The past few weeks has forced everyone to restrict their lives, whether to a greater or lesser extent, and maybe this provides an opportunity to demonstrate how you adapted something to make it more bearable. Think of one or two positive steps that you have taken, however small and just write a few bullet points to remind yourself. 
 
What, then, if you are a person who hates change, and thrives in a role which is repetitive and predictable? It is fine to say that ordinarily you prefer things to be more settled and predictable, but you understand that there is likely to be a need for some flexibility under the circumstances. It might be good to have ready some suggestions about what would help you to manage any changes – being given as much notice as possible, being asked for your suggestions as to how improvements might be made or being able to work more flexibly. 
 
This week actively notice yourself adapting and adjusting to new rules or restrictions and try to react positively when you have to change your normal way of doing things. You may find that you are more able to cope with change than you thought. 
 
 
Interview question of the week - “Why are you leaving your current position” or “why did you leave you last role” 
 
The worst thing to do when faced with this question is to speak about your current employer or colleagues in a negative way. This will make you look unprofessional and alluding to rifts between you and your manager or colleagues will make you appear difficult to work with.  
 
If you left your last employer with a 'bad taste in your mouth', it wouldn't take much for some of the feelings to come out. This makes practicing for this one even more critical!  
 
Instead, focus on what appeals to you about the role you’re applying for and why you’re looking to explore new opportunities. Your answer should reflect your aims for positive personal development. 
 
With the current situation with COVID, it may be that your industry has been badly hit and your business has been affected as a result. A simple sentence saying that will be fine. If you are changing direction completely to a new sector or type of job, concentrate on the transferrable skills that you bring with you and how these will fit with the new role. 
 
If you left due to health or personal circumstance reasons, you need to plan your response to show that you are now ready to return to the workplace and, if appropriate, you have positive ideas about how to make that successful going forward. Attached is a worksheet that you might like to work through to help you to think about this further and help you to focus on the best way to frame your responses.  
 
 
Please do ask for help if you would like some support with any of this as it’s not always easy to put yourself in the employer’s position and think about what they need to know.  
 
Maintaining good Mental and Physical Health 
 
Time to Talk Health is an NHS Service for residents registered with a West Sussex GP who are in need of support to cope/manage with long-term health conditions. Additionally, the 'Five Ways to Wellbeing' is also a distillation of some simple ideas to improving your mental health. Below is also a link to Mind Tools - 'six ways to deal with anxiety'. 
 
 
 
 
There has certainly been a growth in the advertising of local jobs over the last week or so. There is a much wider variety of roles available. We have uploaded some to this site, but please look yourself on job pages, which are changing daily.
