Week 9 
 
Hello to you all. We hope you are all well.  
 
We are now on week 9 of the bulletins – we hope they are providing the kind of information and activities that help you to maintain and improve your employability skills. If you have any requests or suggestions then please do get in contact, we really want to provide you with the support that you need to land that job! Keep giving us feedback on the bits that are most useful too. 
 
Can we just give you a nudge to respond to the survey if you haven’t already done so? You don’t have to give your name if you don’t want to. 
 
We are looking at some exciting ideas to increase the number of ways we can support you, especially as many businesses are starting to go back to work and will be looking to fill their staffing gaps. It is likely that the job seeking process will be much more digitally based, at least in the immediate future and we are keen to make sure that we don’t leave people behind. 
 
We know, from our conversations with you, that not everyone has great IT equipment or broadband and several you need support to make the most of new opportunities.

So, if you haven’t already completed it, please can you do so now? If you don’t have the equipment to register your answers direct, get in touch and we can do it over the phone with you. It is important that we get as many responses as possible to enable us to provide the most widely accessible support. 
 
This week’s Activity 
Einstein is famously quoted as saying, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” 
 
Applying for jobs using websites like Indeed or Monster is extremely easy, you upload your generic CV onto the site, find a job that you like, hit Apply and move on to the next one. 
 
It would be nice to think that any employer reading carefully through your marvellous CV will be able to pick out the bits which make you a particularly good fit for their business and be straight on the phone! 
 
In reality, as we have discussed in the physical WISH clubs, recruiters are not going to have lots of time to spend on each application and unless you make it REALLY EASY for them to see why you are the best choice, you will both will miss out. 
 
It is not their responsibility to trawl through masses of information looking for that nugget of pure gold; it is your responsibility, so the most important lesson this week is to treat every job application individually. 
 
There are a lot more jobs on the live jobs board this week and being advertised generally, the challenge this week therefore is to take the time to apply for a smaller number of jobs but in a very targeted way. Consider for each one, whether you need to re-write any parts of your CV to bring out the skills and experience that most fits the role you are applying for. 
 
Read the company website and see what their aims and mission statement is and make sure that your application mirrors them. Always include a covering letter or message highlighting why you would like to work for them and show that you know what they do! 
 
Decide at the beginning of the week how many of these tailored applications you are going to do and actively look for them. If you can’t find anything you really like, consider doing a practice one just to get you started, choosing from a real advert. You never know, you might convince yourself that you would be a great candidate after all and decide to send it in. If you feel that you still want to do some quick ones as well, then pause before you send your CV and make just one change that makes it more specific. 
 
I’m sure that some people reading this, will immediately say that they are already doing this, and it hasn’t worked. Can I challenge you then to ask someone else to read one of your applications and identify what the job is that you are applying for? There is no guaranteed way to get through the application stage, but this will definitely improve your chances.

Skill of the week - Initiative and problem solving 
 
During the past few weeks there have been staple foods that we couldn’t get hold of and we have needed to find another way of eating or cooking. Share your culinary triumphs and disasters! What have you tried in lockdown that worked brilliantly? What flavour combinations did not turn out so well? 
 
Interview question of the week - “Which aspects have you found particularly challenging during the pandemic?” 
 
As we said last week, it would be very surprising if recruiters and hiring managers didn’t include a question to find out what you learned about yourself during the pandemic. 
 
Answering this question well, will show an interviewer how you manage your emotions when faced with a crisis and helps them to learn about your resilience, motivation, and attitude. Showing that you took positive action to overcome difficulties or mentioning things like establishing and sticking to new regular routines would be a good response. 
 
You could use STAR* to describe a very specific example of where you addressed an issue head on and didn’t leave it to deteriorate. Now is the time to think and plan this answer as it will probably be difficult to pull it together on the day when you are asked it.
