Week 53

Welcome to the Fifty third bulletin. Can you believe we have completed a whole year of WISH in lockdown?

Sign up for Horsham District Council’s Jobs Fair Wednesday 28th April 10am - 3pm!
Registration is open to join us for the first online jobs fair in Horsham which is coming up in just a couple of weeks now. Featuring local employers and openings, come along to meet recruiters who have actual jobs on offer and to pick up some tips and contacts to help you with your job search. If you are looking in a particular sector, make sure that you include that information on your registration details so that employers can look out for you on the day.

We continue to look at some of the ways that you can use lockdown and COVID as a springboard rather than a wall to your journey and tackle the issues that it has thrown up for the work of work in particular.

This week’s LinkedIn Activity
There are some exciting new developments coming to your LinkedIn over the coming weeks, a couple are going to be particularly useful if you are looking for a role in more creative industries. If recording a short video introducing yourself is enough to have you running for the hills, then contact Richard for a chat and he can help you to decide how that might help your job-seeking. Think of it as a “First - first impression!” and try to get across your enthusiasm and passion both for life and the kind of work that you are looking for. Get friends and family to watch it and help you to assess whether it makes you look like someone that they would like to have in their organisation.

And if you have spent some time as a carer there is now a way to show that without needing to just leave a gap in your employment history. There are so many positive skills that come from bringing up children or caring for other groups of people, which can now be showcased on your profile.

By complete co-incidence I came across a phrase under the Job description link in a job advert from Lego this week which I really wish was included in more places,
“Is Imposter syndrome creeping in? Don’t worry – we’d rather hear from you this time than not hear from you at all! You’ve nothing lose in sending us your CV and so we look forward to hearing from you soon.” If this is something you need to hear – please write it down somewhere and keep looking at it! stay-at-home-mom-caretaker-titles-profile

Keep following the bulletins to learn how to use LinkedIn in your job seeking journey.

Looking for some practical ways to prepare for those jobs that you find on our Live Jobs pages?
For those who are new to WISH you will find help to practice answering application or interview questions if you look back through the last year’s bulletins. Just find one that suits you and have a go at one which you know might trip you up. They are all accessible from the bulletin bar on the SETAS website.

How to re-frame your career journey to include those bumps in the road that came with 2020.
It is very easy to think of the last year and a half as an employment disaster, or feel that it is only once you can get back to the career ladder you were on previously that things will start moving positively again. This not only has the effect of limiting the places you are looking for your next move, but can also bring a sense of having wasted time or been unnecessarily delayed on your journey. Maybe thinking more positively about what you have been doing and learnt from your enforced change, will give you a new perspective and even make you more employable.
